Hungary signs deal to buy fighter jets from Sweden

HUNGARY recently signed an agreement to buy fighter jets from Sweden. The multimillion-dollar deal sparked hopes it will lead to the possible ratification of the Nordic country’s long-awaited NATO bid.

The meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson in Hungary”s capital Budapest resulted in the signing of a defense agreement.

Hungary will buy four JAS Gripen fighter jets from Sweden as part of the deal.

The agreement will expand Hungary’s fleet of Gripen jets from 14 to 18.

The Hungarian parliament is expected to vote in favor of Sweden’s NATO ratification once the session resumes next week.

Hungary remains the last NATO member state that has yet to approve Sweden’s entry into the alliance after Turkiye ratified the Nordic country’s request in January.

Kristersson visited Hungary after lawmakers from the ruling party Fidesz demanded that the Swedish Prime Minister hold talks with Orban in Budapest before they consider supporting the Nordic country’s NATO bid.

Swedish aerospace and defense company Saab AB described the warplane as among the best-in-class weapons worldwide.

Its ability to use offensive and defensive simultaneously enables the fifth-generation fighter jet to detect, engage, and suppress or destroy targets effectively.
