THAILAND‘s ambassador to the WTO Pimchanok Vonkorpon Pitfield, accused India of using subsidized rice for the public distribution system.
The Thai ambassador made the statement at the World Trade Organization’s 13th Ministerial Conference, which took place from the 26th through the 29th of February in Abu Dhabi.
The statement caused a diplomatic uproar, causing Indian negotiators to refuse participating in discussions where Thai representatives are present.
Meanwhile, the Thai ambassador’s move was cheered on by the United States, Canada, and Australia.
India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal reiterated the country’s stance on the matter, noting that the best interests of India’s farmers and its fishermen are among the priorities of the government.
