Indonesia reaffirms support for Palestine amid pressure to recognize Israel

INDONESIA will always stand for Palestine.

The Muslim-dominated country once again declared its support for the Palestinians and dismissed rumors of potential diplomatic relations with Israel.

Indonesia made the statement amid pressure to recognize Israel.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi recently said that supporting the Palestinian cause and helping the Palestinian people suffering from the raging war in Gaza forms part of the country’s foreign policy priorities.

Indonesia was among the 78 countries to recognize Palestinian statehood in 1988 and campaigned for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders.

The Southeast nation, which is about 87 percent Muslim, also called for the immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
