AN estimated 100 students rallied in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta on Wednesday to oppose outgoing President Joko Widodo’s perceived political interference in the upcoming elections
The students were seen gathered on the city streets on Wednesday.
Widodo, more popularly known as Jokowi, has not publicly endorsed any of the three presidential candidates in the election.
However, the outgoing President was seen making public appearances with frontrunner Prabowo Subianto.
Subianto is the running mate of Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is running for vice presidency.
A decision by the top court to grant an exception in the eligibility criteria paved the way for 36-year-old Gibran to run for vice president despite the minimum age set at 40.
Jokowi promised not to join any campaign events in the run-up to voting day.
More than 200 million eligible voters in Indonesia will visit voting centers on February 14, 2024 to elect the next national leaders in the world’s third-largest democracy.
