Iran inaugurates last phase of world’s biggest offshore gas field

PHASE 11 of the South Pars Gas Field was officially inaugurated in the presence of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony in Asaluyeh Port, Raisi described the long-delayed project as “complex and unique.”

The South Pars or North Dome Field is a natural gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf and is the largest natural gas field in the world.

It is estimated to hold 14 trillion cubic meters of recoverable gas reserves and 18 billion barrels of recoverable liquefied natural gas.

South Pars phase 11 will initially produce 15 million cubic meters of gas per day before increasing its output to 56 million cubic meters of gas, 50,000 barrels of gas condensate, and 750 metric tons of sulfur per day.

Two overseas companies backed out from the project in 2018 due to pressure from US sanctions.

Local Iranian experts managed the project and is no longer dependent on foreign consultants after foreign firms walked out of it.

The project was four years ahead of schedule and saved the country $800 million in development costs for the gas field.
