IRANIAN Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian visited Moscow at the official invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

The two top diplomats discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest such as the signing of a long-term strategic agreement, Tehran’s nuclear issue, and the war in Ukraine.

One of the main issues raised was the Iran nuclear deal or otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – an agreement signed in 2015 by Iran and six other world powers which include China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, United States—plus Germany.

The deal collapsed after former US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the agreement that he described as a “giant fiction” which led to sanctions reimposed against Iran.

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal was the signature foreign policy achievement of Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama, and so far, efforts to revive the agreement have proven to be unsuccessful.

Earlier this month, Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, visited Iran for another round of nuclear talks where he met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in an attempt to revive the abandoned deal

Meanwhile, during his visit to Russia, the Iranian official revealed that the deputy foreign ministers of the Islamic Republic, Russia, Syria, and Turkiye will hold a meeting in Moscow next week.
