Iran’s snap election set on June 28 after Raisi’s death

IRAN’s constitution requires choosing a successor within 50 days after the President’s death, with election set on the 28th of June.

Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, was appointed the acting president after Ebrahim Raisi‘s death due to a helicopter crash on Sunday.

As the first vice president, he was expected to take over “in the event of the president’s death, dismissal, resignation, absence or illness for more than two months,” based on Article 131 of the Islamic Republic’s constitution.

The next elected president on June 28 will run the country for four years.

Raisi was elected the eighth president of Iran in 2021.

World leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed condolences for Raisi’s death along with other high-ranking officials.

While world leaders showed sympathy over Raisi’s death, videos of several Iranians celebrating his demise went viral online.

Some Iranians who opposed his rule launched fireworks to celebrate his death.

A group of Iranians were also seen dancing in front of Iran’s embassy in London.

The decades-old helicopter manufactured by the U.S. crashed in a mountainous terrain near the Azerbaijan border on Sunday.

Rescuers retrieved the remains of the charred aircraft on Monday without any signs of life.

Registration of candidates ends on the 3rd of June while the election campaign period will be from the 12th through the 27th of June.
