Japan to give additional $660-M aid for NOTO earthquake victims

CABINET officials are set to approve additional aid for the victims of the devastating earthquake in central Japan.

Around one hundred billion yen or nearly $665-M taken from the country’s reserve funds will be allocated for the quake victims.

The additional aid was announced by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during his recent visit to affected areas within the Noto Peninsula.

The emergency package will be used to provide temporary housing, rebuild infrastructure, and offer up to 6 million yen of relief payments per household.

The magnitude-7.5 earthquake that jolted the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture on New Year’s Day killed more than 200 people and displaced over 10,000 others.

Thousands of survivors and evacuees are taking refuge at shelters and hotels.

Many residents in Ishikawa still have no access to water nearly two months after the disaster.

Japan has allocated a total of $1.7 billion in funding for the reconstruction efforts in Ishikawa.
