Japanese PM to visit France, South American countries

JAPANESE Prime Minister Fumio Kishida‘s trip to Europe and South America will take place during Japan’s so-called golden week holidays.

Kishida will attend a meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in France, with Japan to chair the talks. The meeting will focus on addressing international economic and social challenges. The Japanese Prime Minister will also hold a summit meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron to review bilateral ties.

In Brazil, Kishida will hold talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and deliver a speech on Japan’s foreign policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean, which will make him the first Japanese Prime Minister to do so in ten years.

Brazil, which holds the presidency of the Group of 20 this year, is expected to sign bilateral cooperation with Japan in areas from climate change to decarbonization and other environmental issues.

Moreover, the Japanese leader will be bringing a delegation representing at least 40 companies during his six-day itinerary to strengthen investment ties with Brazil. Kishida will also hold a bilateral summit with his counterpart in Paraguay.

Japan’s week-long Golden Week, which falls from the 29th of April through the 5th of May, is an annual event that consists of multiple public holidays. Kishida plans to use the holiday week to boost foreign investments and strengthen ties with other countries.
