Japan’s LDP to leadership election in September as Kishida steps down

JAPAN’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will hold its leadership election on September 27, as reported by Fuji TV.

This decision comes as the party prepares for a change at the top.

Incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced he will step down at the end of September.

His three-year tenure has been troubled by political scandals and decreasing public support.

With Kishida’s departure, the LDP will choose a new leader who is expected to become Japan’s next Prime Minister due to the party’s majority in the lower house.

Ex-economic security minister Kobayashi to run for LDP president

Meanwhile, Japan’s former economic security minister, Takayuki Kobayashi, announced on Monday that he will run in the LDP presidential election next month.

Kobayashi is the first among the expected candidates to officially declare his bid to succeed Kishida.
