Junta says Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi marks 79th birthday under detention

MYANMAR’s ousted former leader Aung San Suu Kyi marked another year of her life under house arrest.

A military coup overthrew her democratically elected government on February 1, 2021.

The coup resulted in renewed clashes between the armed forces and rebel groups opposed to the junta’s rule.

The recent clashes caused thousands of residents to flee to Thailand as the military junta and ethnic rebel groups struggle for control.

Her family claimed they had no contact with the Nobel Peace Prize winner since her imprisonment three years ago.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Myanmar’s military junta said that Suu Kyi, who is serving a 27-year sentence, is in good health.
