Kuwait forms 7th government in 3 years

THE Prime Minister of Kuwait selected a new cabinet following a decree issued by the country’s emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber al-Sabah.

The previous government resigned in January just 3 months after its formation.

Prime Minister Ahmad Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah tendered the previous government’s resignation after lawmakers planned to question ministers over the management of state finances including a debt relief bill that would grant a debt amnesty for Kuwaiti citizens.

Meanwhile, the crown prince reappointed Sheikh Ahmad as Prime Minister in March.

In the same month, the constitutional court nullified the results of legislative elections held in September of last year and ruled to reinstate the previous parliament instead.

The decision restored the authority of lawmakers elected in 2020.

Disagreements between parliament and the ministers have often led to political crisis and the resignation of the previous governments in recent years which hindered economic reforms in the oil-rich Gulf state.

This is Kuwait’s 7 government in 3 years and the fourth one under the leadership of the current prime minister since August.
