Libya orders arrest of 8 officials after deadly storm kills thousands

THE investigation continues as to the cause of a deadly dam collapse that killed thousands of people in Libya.

The disaster had occurred more than two weeks ago but its devastating aftermath remains a reminder of the tragic catastrophe that surprised the North African country.

The public prosecutor’s office in Libya questioned seven former officials and current members of the Water Resources Authority and the Dams Management Authority as part of an inquiry into the recent floods that killed thousands.

Among those questioned was the former mayor of Derna who was removed from his role after the disaster.

Derna is a port city in eastern Libya hit the hardest by the deadly floods caused by Mediterranean Storm Daniel.

The officials were questioned amid allegations that mismanagement, negligence, and mistakes contributed to the disaster.

The deadly storm struck Eastern Libya on September 10 which led to massive destruction of infrastructure and a significant loss of life.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 4,000 people died in the floods, while more than 9,000 others are still missing.

The said officials will be jailed pending the results of the investigation. Meanwhile, Libya continues to receive urgent aid from other countries including the UAE.
