MOST areas in the city of Manila have been flooded due to continuous heavy rain since early Tuesday morning brought by Typhoon Carina.
According to the Manila Police District report as of 3:00 PM, Quirino/Mabini, Roxas Blvd, Dapitan, Lacson, España from Vicente Cruz, and 40 other streets in the city are not passable to light vehicles.
All classes at all levels and work for government employees in Manila are suspended, except for those assigned to basic and health services, as well as disaster response.
Earlier on Tuesday, the mayor urged private companies to refrain from requiring employees to report to work to avoid stranding them.
“Avoid leaving your homes. We appeal to private companies not to require their employees to come to work as they may not be able to reach their destinations,” according to Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan
According to Manila LGU spokesperson, Atty. Princess Abante, all main roads in the city have become impassable.
Monitoring and rescue operations are ongoing in alleys, streets, and roads.
Residents living near the riverbanks are the most affected by the flood.
“All major roads are currently impassable. Rescue and monitoring operations are ongoing by MDRRMO and MTPB. They are also monitoring the streets. Mayor Honey Lacuna is currently roving in various areas; earlier, she was in Sta. Mesa where a large barangay needed evacuation,” according to Atty. Princess Abante, Spokesperson, Manila LGU.
“In my district, about 40% of the area has reported flooding, making it difficult for people to go out. Homes have been inundated, so we are also requesting food packs to be provided to them while they are unable to leave their houses.”
“The problem we have is that there are areas in Manila close to the river, like in the Brick area, earlier around 11:45 [AM], because it was high tide, some areas flooded again,” Abante added.
Aside from the rescue team, Mayor Honey has also been helping in rescuing those affected by flooding.
Since Monday, families have been evacuated due to heavy rains and flooding.
As of now, thousands of families in Manila may already be affected.
In some areas, floodwaters have reached waist-to-neck-deep levels.
“If we count yesterday and the reports we’re receiving today, definitely more than… around 4,000 to 5,000 families in the areas I’ve been monitoring have been evacuated for rescue,” Abante said.
Nighttime rescue operations to flooded area pose challenges—Manila LGU
Manila LGU’s current concern is whether the rains and floods will last until tonight, as rescue operations could become more challenging.
