More than 800,000 people could flee Sudan—UN

THE United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) alerted the international community that Sudanese nationals and existing refugees in Sudan may leave the country amid the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a statement, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, Raouf Mazou said,

“In consultation with all concerned governments and partners, we’ve arrived at a planning figure of 815,000 people that may flee into the seven neighbouring countries”.

As of the latest figures, 73,000 people have left Sudan due to the intensifying violence.

On the other hand, UNHCR Chief Filippo Grandi said,

“We hope it doesn’t come to that, but if violence doesn’t stop we will see more people forced to flee Sudan seeking safety.”

UN warns humanitarian crisis in the country at ‘breaking point’

Meanwhile, amid the ongoing crisis in Sudan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent his emergency relief chief to the country.

In a Twitter post, the official said that the scale and speed of what is unfolding in Sudan is unprecedented.

With this, he announced that Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths will be heading to the country on Tuesday.

According to Griffiths, Sudan was at a ‘breaking point’ and warned that the war could affect not only Sudan but the broader region as well.

The Sudan doctors syndicate has reported that at least 436 people and 2,175 have been injured due to the military clash.
