MOUNT Marapi, an active volcano in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra, erupted for a second time on Sunday. The volcanic activity alarmed residents after 23 people died when it erupted in early December.
The complex volcano spewed volcanic materials on Sunday, January 7, as people watched from a distance.
To recall, 23 hikers died and at least a dozen more were declared missing after Mt. Marapi erupted on December 3, 2023.
Volcanic debris blanketed nearby villages as the complex volcano spewed ash as high as 10,000 feet into the air.
Indonesia alone has nearly 130 active volcanoes and sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire – a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes.
Mount Marapi which is based in West Sumatra is often confused with the stratovolcano Mount Merapi in Central Java. The latter is described as the “most active” and “most destructive” volcano in Indonesia.
