Negotiations underway to send first Japanese astronauts to moon

JAPAN could likely sign an agreement with NASA to send two Japanese astronauts to the moon under the U.S.-led Artemis lunar exploration program.

If the deal pushes through, it would be the first time Japanese nationals would land on the moon.

The lunar exploration mission could take place in 2028 or beyond.

The Artemis Program also marks the first manned flight to the moon since 1972, with plans to establish a lunar base.

Japan and the U.S. are also expected to sign an agreement that seeks to accelerate cooperation in the space field on the sidelines of a bilateral summit scheduled on April 10.

Additionally, Japan is aiming to operate a pressurized rover known as Luna Cruiser on the lunar surface which is currently under development.
