Poland’s demand for war compensation from Germany awaits resolution

POLAND remains hopeful that their pleas for war reparations from Germany will not fall on deaf ears as the matter remains unresolved.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk raised the issue with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his first official visit to Berlin in February.

Tusk told Scholz that settling the bill would be “historically justified,” but added that the issue should not affect warming relations between Germany and Poland.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski echoed the Prime Minister’s appeal by urging Germany to find a creative solution on how to compensate Poland for its losses in World War II.

Poland’s former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski assessed that Germany owed Poland more than €1.3 trillion, which included forced labor of around 2.1 million citizens and the loss of eastern territories to the Soviet Union.

In 1952, the London Agreement on German External Debts assessed that Germany’s final reparation was worth $3 billion while it remains unclear how much money Germany still owes up to this day.
