Qatar joins meeting of NATO defense ministers

QATAR’S ambassador to the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), His Excellency  Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Malki, represented the Gulf country at the meeting of NATO defense ministers in the Belgian capital.

The ministers discussed a number of issues related to nuclear non-proliferation and the prohibition of weapons of mass destruction.

The group also exchanged views on the preparatory committee for the nuclear non-proliferation treaty for the year 2023.

The meeting comes as diplomatic efforts to revive a nuclear deal signed between Iran and the world powers in 2015 have failed.

In 2018, United States President Donald Trump terminated America’s participation in the nuclear deal and re-imposed billions of dollars of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

According to Trump, the deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions that the U.S. has ever made, adding that it failed to protect America’s national security interests.

Qatar’s Governor to the International Atomic Energy Agency advised that cooperation between the Global Nuclear Agency and Iran is the only way to resolve all outstanding issues in reviving the nuclear deal.
