Rio Grande do Sul disaster reshapes Brazil’s climate crisis response—Lula

PRESIDENT Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commented Tuesday on the recent calamity in Rio Grande do Sul, noting that it has changed Brazil’s response to climate disasters.

He stated that the catastrophe in Rio Grande do Sul ‘changed the paradigm’ of the response to climate disasters and that the measures taken to support the people of Rio Grande do Sul will also be applied in other states when necessary.

“What we did in Rio Grande do Sul is not just for Rio Grande do Sul. Any climate crisis in any state, we are obliged to do the same or better than we did in Rio Grande do Sul,” according to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil.

Lula participated in the opening of the March of Mayors, which focused on the floods in the state.

He began his speech with a minute of silence for the 161 victims of the calamity.

During the event, attended by federal authorities, Lula announced measures for municipalities, including new rules for renegotiating social security debts and court-ordered debts, as well as maintaining the payroll tax rate at 8% this year.
