Russia puts longest-range ‘Sarmat 2’ missile on combat duty

Russia puts longest-range ‘Sarmat 2’ missile on combat duty

RUSSIA has officially introduced the Sarmat Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) into combat duty, a move that significantly bolsters its nuclear arsenal.

This decision was confirmed by Yury Borisov, the head of the Roscosmos Space Agency, during a recent event.

The Sarmat ICBM is now fully operational, serving as a replacement for the aging R-36M2 Voevoda missiles.

This liquid-fueled missile, housed in silos, boasts a  range of 11,000 kilometers and a payload capacity of approximately 10 tons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized Sarmat’s long-range capability, which challenges anti-ballistic missile or ABM systems.

In contrast to shorter-range ICBMS, the Sarmat’s extended reach allows it to take alternative flight paths, making interception more difficult.
