SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go underscored the importance of peace and unity during the National Peace Rally organized by Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) on Monday, January 13. In an interview, the senator urged all leaders and citizens to prioritize unity to effectively address the needs of the people, particularly the underprivileged.
“Maraming salamat po sa pamunuan ng Iglesia Ni Cristo, sa pamumuno ni Ka Eduardo Manalo, sa peace rally na ito. Ako naman po ever since, even during the time of former President Duterte, I am for peace. Matagal po ako nagtrabaho sa kanya. Gusto ko po ng kapayapaan, peace on earth, peace in our country,” he stated during an interview at the rally.
The senator highlighted the need to work collectively and avoid wasting time on unnecessary discord. “Para makapagtrabaho na po tayo, bawat oras, bawat minuto na nasasayang po sa hindi pagkakaunawaan, ang nasasakripisyo po ang taong bayan. Parati kong sinasabi na ang serbisyo po sa tao ay serbisyo po ‘yan sa Diyos. Magkaisa tayo, trabaho na tayo para walang masayang na oras.”
When asked about the event’s political implications, Senator Go emphasized that his focus is not on politics and he remains centered on serving the people, especially the poor.
“Ever since ang stand ko po, kapayapaan, para makatrabaho na tayo. Para magbenepisyo po ‘yung mga kababayan nating mahihirap na nangangailangan po ng tulong mula sa gobyerno. Sabi ko nga, bawat oras, bawat minuto na nasasayang dahil sa hindi pagkakaunawaan, Pilipino po, ‘yung mga mahihirap ang magsusuffer,” he explained.
“Ayaw ko pong haluan ng politika ito. Hindi naman po ito magpupulong tungkol sa politika,” Senator Go remarked.
Senator Go also appealed to national leaders to set aside differences and focus on their mandate to serve the Filipino people, especially the marginalized sectors.
“Ibig sabihin, inihalal po ang ating presidente, inihalal po ang ating bise-presidente ng taong bayan. Magkasama nga sila eh na inihalal ng taong bayan. So, in-expect ng taong bayan na sa loob ng anim na taon, magtrabaho po sila para sa kapakanan ng mga kababayan nating mahihirap,” he said.
He extended this call to all branches of government: “‘Yun lang po ang pakiusap ko sa lahat ng ating mga leaders. Sa Executive, both houses of Congress, sa Senado, sa Kongreso, sa lahat po ng mga leader dito sa ating bansa. Magkaisa tayo para naman po ito sa kapakanan ng mga kababayan nating mahirap.”
In a phone interview with DZRH’s “Balansyado,” on the same day, Senator Go highlighted the importance of the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, stressing the need to protect the public’s ability to voice their concerns, especially on pressing socio-economic issues such as healthcare and education.
“Karapatan po ng bawat Pilipino na magkaroon po ng peaceful assembly at ihayag po ang kanilang saloobin ‘no. Ako po’y kaisa ninyo lalo na po sa issue ng PhilHealth (Philippine Health Insurance Corporation),” Senator Go stated.
Go called for unity, reflecting on his experiences working under former President Rodrigo Duterte, where resolving disputes and fostering collaboration among leaders was a priority.
“Ako, gusto ko po’y nagtatrabaho yung mga lider natin, yung tayong mga nasa gobyerno magkaisa po tayo para po makapagtrabaho na tayo nang maayos para sa bayan at makapagserbisyo sa kapwa natin Pilipino lalung-lalo na po yung mga mahihirap nating kababayan na nangangailangan po ng tulong.”
During the discussion, Go reiterated the rally’s broader message of prioritizing the welfare of the Filipino people, especially those facing poverty. He emphasized the necessity of government accountability and action in providing essential services and economic opportunities.
“Kaya tayo may eleksyon, anim na taon po silang pinili, ang pangulo at ang bise presidente. Dapat po’y manungkulan sila ng anim na taon at maibigay po nila ang lahat ng kanilang oras. Makapokus po sila sa trabaho.”
Addressing the systemic challenges faced by many Filipinos, he added, “Eh yung mahihirap nating kababayan, mas marami pong mga Pilipino ang hindi masyadong alam, hindi sila masyadong interesado sa nangyayari sa politika. Mas interesado po sila na may trabaho sila, may pagkain sila, mayroon silang masasandalan na nandid’yan po ang gobyerno.”
Go called for long-term solutions to poverty, such as supporting small businesses, farmers, and ensuring stable employment opportunities.
“Dapat po’y may trabaho, ‘yung mga maliliit na negosyante suportahan, ‘yung mga farmers natin ay dapat unahin. Sila po ang dapat busog dito ‘yung mga farmers natin. At napaka importante po ‘yung employment. Importante may trabaho po ang Pilipino.”
In a separate statement, Senator Go praised the efforts of INC in promoting peace and unity. He reiterated the significance of collaboration in overcoming the challenges faced by the nation.
“I support the call for peace and unity in our country. Magkaisa tayo para makapagtrabaho na tayo nang maayos para sa bayan at makapagserbisyo sa kapwa natin Pilipino lalo na sa mga mahihirap dahil marami pong mga kababayan natin ang nangangailangan ng tulong,” Senator Go stated.
He further added, “Ang peace rally ng Iglesia Ni Cristo ay hindi lamang po para sa mga miyembro nito, kundi para sa lahat ng Pilipino na nagnanais ng kapayapaan. Kaisa ninyo ako sa hangaring ito bilang inyong senador na nais lamang maipagpatuloy ang malasakit at pagseserbisyo sa mga kapwa Pilipino.”
Senator Bong Go’s message strongly aligned with the overarching theme of the event: fostering unity and channeling collective efforts toward the betterment of Filipino lives.
The Philippine National Police estimated that approximately 1.5 million participants attended the Manila event. In Luzon, rallies took place in Legazpi, Albay; Ilagan, Isabela; and Puerto Princesa, Palawan. In the Visayas, gatherings were organized in Cebu City, Iloilo, and Bacolod, Negros Occidental.
Mindanao hosted events in Davao City, Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur; Butuan, Agusan del Norte; and Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental.
