South Korean PM wants to resign after opposition’s landslide win

SOUTH Korea’s opposition parties scored a landslide win in this week’s national assembly elections. Their victory urged senior ruling party politicians to resign, including South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.

The prime minister tendered his resignation a day after the results of the election were announced on Wednesday.

The results were a big political blow to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has three years left in office.

The victory of the liberal opposition forces meant elections meant they would prolong their control of parliament until after the President completed his five-year term in 2027.

The dominance of the opposition could weaken the influence of the country’s conservative president.

The President said he “humbly accepted” the result.

Meanwhile, the big winner in South Korea’s parliamentary election is opposition leader Lee Jae-myung of the liberal Democratic Party who lost the presidential election to President Yoon in 2022.

The president’s former rival is back for revenge and is well-positioned to run again and replace him when his term ends in 2027.

There were reports of the Democratic Party impeaching the President if it succeeded in securing a supermajority.
