Strong Heroes of DepEd: Metrobank ACES teacher-awardee, bringing change to the community and the lives of the learners

METROBANK ACES teacher-awardee, bringing change to the community and the lives of the learners.

“We don’t need too much intelligence but a teacher who cares and loves their work.”

With her almost three decades of experience as a teacher, Education Program Supervisor Lourdes “Bibay” Matan of Schools Division of Calbayog City proved that consistency in providing excellent service will bring real change not only to the learners and schools but also to the whole community.

After bringing home the 2009 Outstanding Filipino Teacher from the Metrobank Foundation, Teacher Bibay continued her good initiatives and advocacies such as fighting to stop early and arranged marriages, literacy projects, helping young victims of violence and needy students and barangays in her area. She began to expose children, women, and parents about the evils of forced marriage and the importance of having a voice and education.

“Though it was difficult, I opened the community to the realities of life by changing their perspective.” “From the horrific behaviors of people in the community to peaceful, happy and educated parents,” he said.

He also did not give up on the aged who wanted to go back to school and helped them read by conducting Parent-Child Tandem Reading Activity (PCTRA), reading levelling in Filipino and English subjects, levelled workbooks for differentiated instruction, community immersion in literacy and adult literacy.

He also showed his expertise in innovating in the production of materials such as Bahandi san Calbayog, Minamat nga Bahandi San Calbayog and Panurundon sa Pagbasa which helped solve the literacy problem in the Calbayog division during the pandemic.

These advocacies made it possible to honor Teacher Bibay again with the 5th Metrobank Foundation Award for Continuing Excellence and Service (ACES) this year.

“Because of this award, the pain I felt from losing my third child due to active service was lessened. This assures me that my sacrifices are worth it for the sake of giving quality service in an excellent way.”

“Teachers like this make an impact on the lives of the students and our education system,” Teacher Bibay said.
