THE political future of the Move Forward Party is in danger after Thailand’s Election Commission threatened to dissolve the reformist group.
This came after the Constitutional Court ruled that the party’s proposal to amend Thailand’s strict lèse-majesté law was unconstitutional.
Members of the commission reviewed the court’s ruling and unanimously agreed to file a case with the court seeking the Move Forward Party’s dissolution.
The commission believes the proposal to amend Thailand’s royal anti-defamation law was an attempt to overthrow the constitutional monarchy.
The court has yet to accept the petition.
A spokesperson for Move Forward Party said the party’s legal team would try their best to prove the group’s innocence and to prevent it from getting dissolved.
Under Section 112 of the Thai Criminal Code, it is illegal to criticize, insult, or threaten the monarchies of Thailand consisting of the king, queen, or heir apparent which can lead to a maximum 15-year prison sentence for each offense.
