Thai police, military brace for mass protests next month

THE Royal Thai Police and the Armed Forces of Thailand are bracing themselves for a possible wave of mass protests next month.

Talks are underway to impose security measures in case chaos erupts should Move Forward Party Leader Pita Limjaroenrat fails to be elected Prime Minister by mid-July.

The police and military fear supporters of Move Forward Party, as well as its major coalition party Pheu Thai, may stage violent protests in case the former failed to gain enough support to elect Pita as the next Prime Minister of Thailand.

The House and Senate will likely convene on July 13 for a joint session to elect Thailand’s 30th Prime Minister.

Pita needs to secure a majority of votes from 750 members of the parliament and senators to be elected prime minister.

The 500 newly-elected MPS will be sworn in at a state ceremony on July 3.

Pita said he is confident to gain enough support from Senate that could lead him to become the next prime minister.

The Move Forward Party leader expressed confidence despite an ongoing investigation over his alleged controversial media shares that could disqualify him from the prime minister race.

Meanwhile, the eight prospective coalition parties formed by Pita will convene on Thursday to discuss a backup plan in case they cannot proceed with the formation of a government.
