Thailand anticipates surge of Chinese tourists as visa exemptions start next week

THE Airports of Thailand anticipate more than 120,000 Chinese visitors to arrive at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi Airports next week.

Thailand’s visa-free scheme for Chinese and Kazakh nationals will begin on September 25, 2023, and will run until February 29, 2024.

The president of the Airports of Thailand (AOT) said an estimated 674 flights or an average of 96 flights per day will take place from China to Suvarnabhumi Airport during the first week of the visa-free policy.

The visa-free scheme allows citizens of China and Kazakhstan to stay in the country for 30 days without a visa.

Thailand aims to attract five million Chinese tourists by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian country announced plans to lure more Indian tourists despite India not being included on the list of visa-exempt countries.

Thailand’s new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will travel to India by the end of this year to meet his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi.

So far, Thailand has welcomed 19 million tourists between January and September 17 and is projected to receive 25-30 million international tourists in 2023.
