Thailand considers proposal to build first nuclear power plant

THE proposal to adopt nuclear energy as a source of clean energy still needs to gain public acceptance in Thailand.

Clean energy campaigns promoting solar, wind, and biomass power in Thailand also sparked conversations about nuclear energy adoption.

The development costs surrounding nuclear energy are lower compared to other forms of clean energy and have the potential to boost Thailand’s economy, according to experts.

However, much of the society remains hesitant about its potential negative impact.

Thailand’s revised Power Development Plan includes a proposal to build the first nuclear power plant in the country.

Endorsing the revised plan will require the energy ministry to hold public hearings on the issue that could start sometime this month or early March.

Public hearings on the matter are required after a powerful earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011 sparked concerns about the safety of nuclear energy.

Thailand pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.
