Thailand welcomes over 18,000 Chinese citizens on first day of visa exemption scheme

THE mutual visa exemption policy between Thailand and China is making waves as both countries have enjoyed an influx of visitors since it took effect on March 1.

More than 18,200 Chinese visitors traveled to Thailand on Friday while China welcomed nearly 4,000 Thai travelers on the same day.

Tourists and business travelers from Thailand benefitted from the policy.

Under the agreement, ordinary official passport and ordinary passport holders from Thailand and China will be allowed to enter and stay in each other’s country visa-free for up to 30 days.

In a previous interview, Thai Prime Minister Thavisin hailed the initiative as part of Thailand’s identity since “most Thais have Chinese heritage.”

“I think [we can] go back to the ‘Who we are’ again, because most of the Thais have Chinese heritage. Our ancestors come from China. And we always have a pleasant relationship between people-to-people, the Thai and Chinese. Thai like to travel a lot to China. There are many, many cities that the Thai like to visit. Beijing, Shanghai, are the main but there are many other cities that our people like to go,” Srettha Thavisin Prime Minister of Thailand.
