THAILAND’s Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) warned that the domestic gas supply for power generation may be insufficient to supply local electricity needs this summer.
Production at the Erawan gas field is set to double in April but still, it may not be enough to cover the soaring electricity demand.
Erawan has witnessed declining gas production since 2018.
The increasing electricity demand and declining production at the conventional gas field could lead Thailand to rely more on gas imports to sustain its local energy needs.
Experts believe the extreme hot season in Thailand is due to the impact of the El Niño, a weather phenomenon that causes oceans to heat up.
El Niño can also trigger worse weather disasters worldwide such as fierce droughts, wildfires, and heatwaves to deadly flooding and tropical storms.
