TRINIDAD and Tobago has declared a state of national emergency following a massive oil spill that occurred last week.
The spill has severely impacted beaches along Tobago’s southwest coast.
The vessel found overturned near Tobago, has not been identified, leaving authorities uncertain about its contents and origins.
Prime Minister Keith Rowley addressed the situation in a press conference, expressing concerns about the origins of the vessel responsible for the spill.
Efforts to contain the leak have been challenging, with divers struggling to manage the situation.
The exact extent of the spill and the remaining oil on the submerged vessel remain unclear.
In response to the crisis, the government has pledged to spare no expense in rehabilitating the affected beaches.
However, Prime Minister Rowley emphasized that the cleanup efforts would require substantial resources and cautioned that restoration could only commence once the situation is brought under control.
As cleanup efforts continue, a Clean Gulf Associates response vessel has been deployed approximately four miles southeast of South Pass Louisiana to aid in skimming crude oil from the affected area.
