UAE offers condolences as deadly landslide claims lives in Georgia

THE emirates showed solidarity after a landslide hit the Western Georgian Region of Racha this week.

The death toll has risen to eleven while more than 30 people are still missing.

The deadly landslide triggered an emergency rescue that involves 400 firefighters, police units, drones, special equipment, and border police helicopters.

Rescue efforts are still underway.

The landslide was dubbed the country’s worst natural disaster since 1990.

The disaster occurred on Thursday evening in the popular resort Racha region located near the Russian border which is also a favorite summer holiday destination among the locals.

Footage of the landslide showed mud, tree trunks, and other debris partly covering the lush green valley once compared to a ‘mountain paradise.’

The UAE also wished for a speedy recovery for all the injured.

Earlier this year, trade and economic ministers from both the UAE and Georgia signed an agreement to further strengthen their blooming trade ties.
