THE US Navy asked Australia to send its warship to the Red Sea to strengthen its multi-national force amid brewing tensions in the region.
The request comes amid strings of attacks against American personnel in the Red Sea blamed on Iran-linked militias.
The US Navy sought help from Australia by requesting a warship in the strategic waterway as part of an extended multi-national force.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers confirmed that the Australian government received the request from the US Navy on Thursday.
‘’The attacks took place as conflict between Israel and Hamas continued. The US military blamed Iran for using its proxies in the region to launch the attacks. Iran on the other hand said the resistance groups were acting independently. Pentagon reported that as of December 12, there have been at least 92 attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-aligned groups since October 17,’’ Jim Chalmers said.
Iran previously warned of “uncontrollable consequences” for the U.S. for supporting Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.
