Venezuela issues arrest warrant for ex-opposition leader Juan Guaido

VENEZUELA’s Chief Prosecutor, Tarek William Saab, announced an arrest warrant for former opposition leader Juan Guaido, currently residing in the United States.

Charges include “money laundering, treason, and causing economic damage” to Venezuela.

Three prosecutors will handle the case, with plans to request Interpol’s assistance.

Saab alleges Guaido created a fake government, costing Venezuela $19 billion, with support from the state oil company PDVSA’s U.S. subsidiary, Citgo.

Saab hopes for international cooperation to return Guaido to Venezuela.

Juan Guaido, formerly president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, declared himself “interim president” in 2019, garnering Western support, while Maduro’s government won the 2020 elections.

The arrest warrant adds complexity to Venezuela’s political situation.
