Venezuelan prisoners end five-day hunger strike

THOUSANDS of inmates from 51 detention centers nationwide participated in the five-day hunger strike which started on June 9.

The protest involved prisoners from 17 of Venezuela’s 23 states.

Protesters called for improvement in prison conditions, with overcrowding, poor health conditions, and food shortages plaguing detention centers in the country.

Some inmates claimed they were serving time in prison without ever being sentenced.

Venezuelan prisons continue to. portray a scene of violence and a humanitarian crisis as authorities and gang leaders fight for control over the detention centers.
