Website crashes as online petition to impeach South Korea’s president surge online

THE online petition called for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to resign and accused him of corruption and an attempt to trigger a war with North Korea.

The campaign also accused President Yoon of exposing South Koreans to health risks by letting Japan release treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

More than 800,000 people signed the petition since it went live 12 days ago.

The campaign was posted on the National Assembly’s website on the 20th of June and will stay there until the 20th of July.

Any petition signed by more than 50,000 people requires the South Korean parliament to present it to a committee which will then decide whether to put it to the National Assembly for a vote.

In the first few days since the petition was posted, people attempting to enter the website experienced delayed access for about 20 minutes to over an hour, but in recent days, the website has crashed.

The speaker of the parliament promised to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
