Zelensky calls on Biden, Xi Jinping to join peace summit

UKRAINE’s President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an urgent video plea for world leaders to join a peace summit in Switzerland next month.

This follows a deadly Russian attack on a DIY hypermarket in Kharkiv on Saturday, killing at least 16 and injuring dozens.

Zelensky specifically called on U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to attend the summit starting June 15th, urging them to show leadership in advancing real peace.

“I am appealing to the leaders of the world who are still aside from the global efforts of the Global Peace Summit – to President Biden, the leader of the United States, and to President Xi, the leader of China,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine stated.

“Please, show your leadership in advancing the peace – the real peace and not just a pause between the strikes. The efforts of the global majority are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled. Please support the Peace Summit with your personal leadership and participation,” Zelenskyy added.

China puts conditions on Ukraine Peace Summit, insists on Russian participation for fair talks

Meanwhile, on Monday, China said that it supports international peace conference on Ukraine recognized by Russia. Beijing backs “timely convening of conference recognized by both Russian and Ukrainian sides.

China emphasizes conference should involve Moscow’s participation, ensure “equal participation of all parties and a fair discussion” on peace plans.

“China encourages all efforts that are conducive to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis.” Mao Ning, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
