2 of Italy’s most active volcanoes erupt, alert levels raised

2 of the most active volcanoes in Italy have erupted, causing severe disruption among thousands of travelers and alert levels raised.

Catania Airport in Sicily was temporarily closed after Italy’s Mount Etna and the smaller Stromboli volcano erupted.

At least 90 outbound and inbound flights have been cancelled which in turn affected around 15,000 passengers.

Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, displayed intense activity in recent days.

Standing at almost 11,000 feet, it is Italy’s tallest peak and has erupted multiple times in decades.

Almost 200-km away lies Mount Stromboli which also spewed hot ash and lava. The 924-m stratovolcano erupted after a gradual increase in volcanic activity was observed in recent days.

Italy is the only country in mainland Europe that has active volcanoes.
