32 detained in Venezuela for alleged plan to assassinate Pres. Maduro

IN Venezuela, 32 individuals, including civilians and soldiers, were arrested on suspicion of planning to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro, allegedly with support from the US.

After an extensive investigation, authorities are considering charging 11 more people, including activists and journalists.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab reported that all suspects have confessed to their involvement, facing charges of treason, terrorism, and conspiracy.

President Maduro has called for severe punishment and ordered the expulsion of implicated military personnel.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino attributed the plot to the “far right” and claimed support from the US Central Intelligence Agency, OR CIA and Drug Enforcement Administration OR DEA.

A video implicating opposition figure Maria Corina Machado in the alleged conspiracy has been released. Authorities suggest more arrests could follow.

Despite facing eased sanctions for committing to fair 2024 elections, Maduro remains under scrutiny.

The UN Human Rights Committee has expressed concerns about the persecution of dissidents in Venezuela.
