Turkiye withdraws from European arms treaty

TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan joined NATO allies in suspending its implementation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, an agreement that dates back to the Cold War era.

Erdoğan signed a decree to officially mark his withdrawal from the pact.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry made it clear that Türkiye has not withdrawn from the pact but has only suspended its implementation, noting that implementation is no longer possible since Russia withdrew from the treaty last year.

On November 7, 2023, Russia withdrew from the treaty after suspending its participation in 2015.

The United States, Canada, Moldova, and Poland followed suit.

Signed on November 19, 1990, in Paris and ratified by the Turkish government in 1992, the treaty limits the number of conventional weapons and equipment owned by armed forces in 30 countries.

The pact also covers information exchange and inspections.

Increasing international tension urged Turkiye to withdraw its participation from the pact.
