THE City government of Davao, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), continues to support the underprivileged and homeless parents through responsible parenthood and positive life skills training.
Carmela Grado, Overseer of the Paginhawaan Drop-In Center for Children (PDIC), said the Capability and Responsible Parenthood training is part of the city’s initiatives to support and strengthen parents and families living in poverty, particularly those who live on the streets.
The most recent training was held at the Apo View Hotel on August 26- 27 with 48 participants.
“This is part of the city government’s program. This gives the parents an opportunity to be educated, learn about the laws about parenting, and the things that they should be doing as parents,” Grado told the City Information Office.
“We’re looking for long-term solution that they will not return to the streets,” she added.
Children’s rights, prevention of abuses on the streets, and the role of the parents to their children were also discussed during the training.
Grado said this initiative, which started in 2008, has helped the attendees as some parents and their children have already found work.
“We have success stories. We have street children who now have jobs. We also have parents who are now working with the city government,” she said.
