IT has been confirmed that Sagip Rep. Rodante Marcoleta will run for senator in the 2025 elections.
The veteran trial lawyer and legislator’s decision to run stems from a strong call by the people for him to move to the upper chamber of Congress.
But what are his priorities if he wins a Senate seat?
“In the House of Representatives, there are so many laws that I can enumerate for you. However, we encounter problems when it comes to their implementation,” according to Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, Senatorial Aspirant.
One example Marcoleta cited is the improper implementation of the EPIRA Law, or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, which aims to reduce electricity rates.
“EPIRA was created 23 years ago, but until you lower the price of electricity, there will be a continuing violation of that law,” added Marcoleta.
He also pointed out that the Local Government Code is not being properly enforced.
According to him, only about two percent of over 42,000 barangays across the Philippines are able to sustain themselves without relying on the national government.
“How do you think the smallest political unit of our society can contribute to the overall development of this country? We need to help them, but the decentralization and autonomy promised by the law have not been fulfilled. This is due to flawed implementation,” he stated.
These are just some of the existing laws that, according to Marcoleta, require stricter enforcement.
In his experience as a Congressman, one term is not enough to pass a proposed law. It would be a waste if, after all that effort, it is not implemented correctly.
“It’s not good to create so many laws only to leave them on the shelf. The process takes too long, and making laws is very costly,” he stressed.
Marcoleta previously ran for senator in the 2022 elections but withdrew toward the end of the campaign.
This time, however, Marcoleta assures that his candidacy is final.
