ENERGY Minister Chris Bowen revealed a plan to build 10 megawatts electrolyzer in the city of Wodonga in Victoria as Australia turns to hydrogen production to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The construction of the new electrolyzer will be used to blend green hydrogen into gas networks and supply power to around 40,000 homes.
Electrolyzers are a critical technology for producing low-emission hydrogen from renewable or nuclear electricity.
Construction of the new electrolyzer is set to start this year while operations are set to kick off in 2025.
In May, the Labor government announced a A$2 billion “Hydrogen Headstart” program to accelerate the production and export of hydrogen fuel.
In October of last year, Australia announced plans to fast-track multi-billion-dollar renewable energy projects in Victoria and Tasmania, such as offshore wind farms and undersea transmission cables.
Australia has pledged to become an international role model in climate change after years of being labeled an ‘offender’ of it, with an ambitious goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
