Brazil reexamines temporary release of prisoners after hundreds escaped during Christmas

THE Brazilian Chamber of Deputies or CCJ is analyzing the second project of the law to end the temporary release of prisoners, also known in Portuguese as “saidinhas’’ of prisoners, after the first voting was approved in the House will now go to the Senate.

Saidinha refers to the temporary release granted by Brazilian courts so that prisoners can resocialize and maintain their bond with the world outside of prison.

The project awaits analysis at the CCJ, after being approved by the Chamber’s Public Security Committee at the end of November last year.

Shortly afterward, Brazil’s National Congress went into recess.

The saidinhas project raised alarms and returned to the center of debate after the death of one police officer, who was killed by one of the suspects, who was enjoying the benefit of temporary release from prison but didn’t return back to jail after going out during the Christmas holiday last year.

Brazilian police officer shot in the head during the pursuit of two suspects

To recall, Brazilian military police officer Sgt. Roger Dias da Cunha was shot in the head while pursuing two suspects who were on the run during the Christmas holiday in December last year.

He managed to catch up with one of the criminals and ordered them to stop several times but was surprised by the man, who pulled out a gun and shot him several times in the head.

The officer was just 29 years old and had a newborn daughter.

Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, authorities continue to search for more than 250 prisoners who didn’t come back after they were temporarily released on Christmas day, noting that 3 of the said prisoners are heads of the notorious gang leaders in the country.

Those who failed to come back are now considered as fugitives.
