THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) inspected the Bicol International Airport (BIA) today, February 6 to ensure the safety of the runway in light of the recent activity of Mayon Volcano.
CAAP Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo, together with Transportation Undersecretary for Aviation Robert Lim, personally visited BIA to oversee the continuous inspection of the runway, aiming to prevent ashfall and contaminants that could impact aircraft operations.
CAAP Area 5 Manager Cynthia Tumanut stated that no flight cancellations occurred due to Mayon-related activities. Furthermore, the most recent phreatic eruption occurred last Sunday. Regular runway inspections are underway, with no detection of ashfall reported.
Meanwhile, CAAP Director General Tamayo, Usec Lim, and Area 5 Manager Tumanut convened to discuss the preparation for the acceptance and turnover of BIA facilities to CAAP.
As of now, CAAP has not yet granted final acceptance of the airport, as the Department of Transportation has initiated a contract bid for the construction of a passenger terminal, runway extension, and other facilities at BIA.
Through this discussion, the acceptance process will be expedited, enabling CAAP to carry out repairs and other maintenance work at BIA.
