Cable car accident leaves one dead, 184 stranded in mid-air

THE busy Eid al-Fitr holiday in the Mediterranean city of Antalya was marked with tragedy after a cable car transporting eight people inside flung open while the amusement ride was suspended meters high up in the air.

A 54-year-old Turkish man died and seven were injured when a cable car pod struck a pole and burst open.

Turkiye’s Interior Ministry explained that a cable car system at Sarisu-Tunektepe plunged into a rocky area after the pylon collapsed,

The incident caused the passengers to fall to the mountainside below.

At least 184 people were rescued successfully after getting trapped in the cable car system’s cabins for hours.

After assessing the gravity of the. situation, the government sent more than 500 search and rescue personnel, over 100 vehicles, a military cargo plane, helicopters, ambulances, and drones in a daring rescue mission to save trapped passengers.

The incident happened during Eid, a time when families flock to local resorts together to observe the Muslim holy month.

Investigators, including an expert commission, engineers, as well as health and safety experts were assigned to determine the cause of the incident.
