Calls for pregnant women to undergo virus test amid Zika outbreak fears

THE Public Health Office in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a western province in Thailand, urged expectant mothers to take urgent action by taking a Zika virus test.

Fears grip in the resort town of Hua Hin as it battles a sudden surge in Zika cases.

The latest data reveals there are 25 confirmed cases.

First identified in Africa and later on in other tropical regions, the virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes to humans.

The virus is linked to birth defects among unborn babies such as problems with brain development and microcephaly or a condition where a baby’s head is smaller than expected.

More than a week ago, a leading expert in Thailand warned people to protect themselves against mosquito bites amid an outbreak of the virus in Bangkok.
