Cambodia’s ex-PM returns after ruling party’s landslide victory

THE ruling Cambodian People’s Party claimed a landslide victory in the recent election.

The sweeping victory marked the return of former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to the political arena.

The ruling party won 50 out of 58 seats.

The party plans to elect Hun Sen as the new Senate President.

The 71-year-old former military general served as Prime Minister of Cambodia from 1985 to 2023.

Hun Sen officially handed power to his eldest son, Hun Manet, following the national elections held in July last year, which ended his nearly four-decade rule.

Being president of the Senate will allow him to act as head of state when the king is traveling abroad.

Cambodia forged strong ties with China under Hun Sen’s rule. His son, who is the current prime minister of Cambodia, promised an even stronger ties with Beijing.
