Campaign to reduce plastic use gains millions of supporters in Cambodia

MORE than 4.3 million people in Cambodia supported the campaign to reduce the use of plastic in the country.

The initiative was launched on September 1, 2023, under the slogan “Today, I Don’t Use Plastics.”

The participants include teachers, students, workers, and other contributors nationwide.

Studies revealed humans are producing more than 380 million tons of plastic every year, and up to 50% of these wastes are single-use plastics.

Experts warned humans would have produced 26 billion metric tons of plastic waste by 2050 if this trend continues.

Plastic waste has become an increasing problem in Cambodia, one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

The Southeast Asian nation uses millions of plastics daily, Phnom Penh alone currently generates more than 3,500 tonnes of municipal waste daily of which 20 percent is plastic.

The Ministry of Environment urged residents to plant more trees to achieve 60 percent forest cover and a carbon-neutral Cambodia by 2050.
