THE clashes between rival factions in the Libyan Capital of Tripoli have left 55 dead and 146 injured before calm was restored.
The fighting that lasted for about two days was the most intense violence the city has witnessed this year.
Tensions flared after Mahmoud Hamza, a senior commander of the 444 Brigade, was allegedly kidnapped by the rival group Special Deterrence Force at an airport in Tripoli.
The detained commander was released by the rival group after 24 hours causing tensions to calm down in the city.
The country’s health ministry earlier reported of civilians being trapped in their homes and unable to escape the violence.
Authorities have facilitated the evacuation of the 300 families trapped in the armed clashes in Tripoli.
Libya is currently divided between an un-backed government ruling in the western part of the country and another in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
The people in Libya are still waiting for elections to take place in the hope it could solve the political, economic, and security crises that have characterized the country since the fall and assassination of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
